Meituan Power Bank Rental

Meituan power banks have become ubiquitous in China. as the total number of Meituan Power Banks now exceeds

2 million. Considering the success of Meitun in China, and the early stage nature of power bank sharing

internationally, it is worth considering how Meituan became so successful with power bank rentals. There are three main reasons:

90/10 revenue model:

Meituan gives 90% of the revneue generated from the shared power banks to the venue hosting the stations. The

average station generates 400 rmb per month, and with 2 million stations active across China.

Installation model:

Meituan is a food delivery company and has found a way to leverage it’s relationship with restaurants and

bars by offering restautants a discount on Meituan delivery services if the power bank station is installed on

premise. As you can see below, the power bank station doesn’t need to be displayed prominently.

Meituan power bank stations are placed at bars and restaurants associated with Meituan's delivery service.

Payment model:

One major difference between China and international markets for rental power banks is the payment method for

consumers. In China, QR using WeChat or AliPay is the only method of payment, however internationally QR via

APP scan or H5 scan has been attempted with limited results. In fact the lack of easy payment methods was one

of the reasons why power bank rental grew slowly between 2018 - 2022 (the other factor was Covid19).

However, in 2023 Stripe released a low cost payment terminal and the question of payment became much

easier. Now, most power bank rental companies offer ‘tap and go’ and this has proven to be the way forward. If
